Is my car insurance cancelled automatically on deregistration?

No, it does not simply vanish: the registration office reports the deregistration to your insurer and the policy usually converts into a premium-free dormant policy. If you want to end the contract for good or have sold the car, additionally inform the insurer yourself, ideally with a copy of the purchase contract.

What if the buyer does not re-register my sold car?

Report the sale yourself immediately: send the registration office and your insurer the notice of sale with the purchase contract and the buyer details. That ends tax and insurance obligations for you, and the office can forcibly deregister the vehicle if needed. Without this notice you may keep on being liable for taxes and fines.

  1. Send the notice of sale with the purchase contract to the registration office
  2. Inform the insurer with a copy of the purchase contract
  3. If the buyer still does not react, the office pursues forced deregistration
