eVB number: what it is, what it costs, how fast it arrives

The eVB number is a 7-character code of your car liability insurance and the mandatory proof for every registration, transfer of keeper and for temporary plates. It is free of charge, usually arrives within minutes by email or text and is valid for several months depending on the insurer.

As of: July 2026

What is an eVB number and what do I need it for?

The eVB number (electronic insurance confirmation) is a 7-character code of digits and letters through which the registration office electronically retrieves your car liability insurance. You need it for new registration, re-registration, transfer of keeper and for temporary plates. It replaced the former paper "Doppelkarte".

How fast do I get an eVB number?

Usually instantly: with an online sign-up or on request from your insurer, the eVB number typically arrives within minutes by email or text, at the latest the next working day. So you can still get it at short notice before a registration appointment or right before picking up the purchased car.

What does an eVB number cost?

Nothing: the eVB number itself is free, it only confirms that car liability insurance exists. You pay premiums only once the vehicle is actually registered and the policy becomes active. The widespread belief that the number costs money stems from paid short-term policies for transfer drives.

How long is an eVB number valid?

Depending on the insurer usually 3 to 6 months, sometimes up to 2 years; each provider sets the exact period itself (as of July 2026). An eVB is also valid for a single registration procedure only and expires afterwards. For a temporary plate you need a separate, special eVB.

Does the seller insurance transfer to me when buying a car?

Yes, automatically and temporarily: when you buy a registered car, the existing liability policy of the seller transfers to you, so the car stays covered without a gap until you re-register. You have a special termination right of one month and are free to switch to your own insurer.

Can I take out car insurance before the purchase?

Yes, it is even recommended: many insurers issue the eVB number before the purchase is final, sometimes even without concrete vehicle data. That way the proof of insurance is ready for registration or temporary plates the moment you pick up the car. Premiums start only from registration.
