How the index is built

The basis is every publicly active car listing on wiveda.de on the reference date, the same data as the open market-price dataset. The figure is the median of the asking prices in euro, complemented by the 10th and 90th percentile (linearly interpolated), the median mileage and the median first-registration year. Asking prices are not transaction prices and the index does not value any single vehicle. Each edition is frozen at the start of the month and never changed afterwards. Editions with fewer than 5 listings are flagged as a small sample.

Class rule of the distribution: fixed class width of 2,500 euro, each class runs from its lower bound up to but excluding its upper bound, the first class starts at 0 euro. The topmost class is open and starts one class width above the class holding the 90th percentile, capped at 97,500 euro. Every listing of the sample falls into exactly one class, and the classes add up to the sample size. Every column can therefore be recomputed from the published sample of the edition.

The frozen sample of this edition holds one row per listing with brand, body type, asking price, mileage and first-registration year, without listing identifiers. The median of the asking-price column yields the index figure. Plus the live market-price dataset by brand and model.
